I have a little bitty teeny tiny suggestion. Can we please have the ability to use the strike tag? There are several times I've wanted to use it and been unable to, and with the fanfic library opening up soon, the occasion might rise that, say Usagi's writing a letter to Mamoru and the author wants to present it as written, scribbles and scratch-outs included.

It's just a handy tag that could be useful. :)
"Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink."

<font style="text-decoration: line-through;"> does it. Really. But I do agree that the <strike> tag would be much more convenient.
Vandalia1998 : Welcome back! We're glad you like the new look of the site. However, this is the Suggestions Box, a place to make suggestions about things to change the site and make it better. A post like yours would be much more appropriate in Central Control.

'Nuff said, really.
Google ads keeps telling me that I should meet sexy lesbian singles. or telling me how to Make Him Fall In Love You Can Become The Woman He Adores And Never Wants To Leave. I get the vague feeling that this is supposed to be all kids friendly n stoof, and i saw that teams aren't supposed to be about pairing up or whatever, so... is there any way to make the google ads more kid friendly, less omg date someone now?

not sure how this is a suggestion, just an observation.

See the avatar next to my name here? I'm not the only one with an avatar because I'm special, I'm the only one with an avatar because I've not written the code to allow people to allow people to set their own.

I'd like someone to write the front-end code to allow users to set and clear their avatar.

email/IM me if you know PHP/MySQL and want to do this. Serious inquiries only.

I'm having the worst time getting a crescent up and running. As soon as I can get that done I'll actually be able to look at the avatar code. x_x

astromath - Yup, we're definitely trying to get that going soon. Hopefully we'll have something in the next couple weeks or so. =)

meelah Nope. I like this way.

The items were fun.
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
I would like to ammend   Marsie 's suggestion and "update" the FAQ to include things such as PGSM (the live action power-rangers esque series), the re-release of the manga first in Japan then worldwide under Kodansha, not DiC and merchedice following and the announcement, a very serious one, of a NEW Sailormoon series.

Give me a few minutes guys, and ill make it happen. Let me know what files specifically you want updated. With the site in it's current state, i dont see any reason why i couldnt give you write permissions on certain faqs, as long as you stick to the guildines.

If the site is coming back around, I would like to throw my hat in the ring for team Pluto due to my background in penetration testing and security.
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
With such low site activity at the moment, I can't really see the need for any new staff at this time. As we get closer to the release of the new series, I could see the possibility for some new staff IF the site is opened back up to new users and the population grows again. We'd have to go through and replace any MIA Supers and then fill in the Senshi as needed.
signature image Hello, sweetie!
The item system is borked. It will take serious debugging. I dont have an opinion one way or another about whether we should run it. I just know getting to a point where we are running it will be quite a bit of work. Josh will have to decide if he wants to bother with it or not... unless someone who wants it is willing to fix the code.
signature image
The item system isn't ranking very high right now on my priority list. But if someone wants to volunteer to focus on that system specifically, I'm willing to help get it functional as long as I it's not my primary focus. At least until we get the rest of the system cleaned up.
I will take a look around, but I can not promise anything, we have a game going under our belt right now. What are the known bugs with the items system?
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
In technical terms... it is a flaming pile of kludged together code which I never bothered to fix.
signature image
Is duplicating the functionality in PHP using a database solely for storage a feasible option or are you just looking to clean up and debug the existing module?
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
You really have never looked at the code, have you? Either that or you aren't using terms in the correct way.

The Apache module is not a question right now. We aren't using. Period. No talk of module.

The items plugin is in PHP using MySQL--as is the entire crescent system. Only the module was written in C. We aren't using the module. So, effectively, 100% of the code is PHP using MySQL...

Your question is incoherent or horribly ill-informed.
signature image
So all authentication including user login/mysql is no longer handled by the crescent module? I was speaking of the apache plugin that handles these functions and doing away with it all together, however it seems this is already done? No shared host (at least not the many I have worked with) allow custom modules.
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
Which is why I wrote the no_module system well over a decade ago...

And told you as much (including a link to the code) here.

I was un-aware that this existed. Should have read the post a little more carefully. This is what I had in mind.

So, I guess my job is done here then. *dust off hands* LoL
Life is like an orange, it is small, round and has a few pips in it... Oh, and some have half of one for breakfast.
Have never looked at the site code.
Have said I would but been too lazy and or busy to do it.
I might actually do it this time...

Maybe...

Thinking about it...
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Omg I looked at it...
And now my wife is calling me to come help her wash the puppy >_<
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I looked at it, but it's all Greek to me lol. I'm the first to admit I know absolutely nothing about coding. I know just enough (VERY basic) C# and HMTL to be (not really) dangerous, and I don't even remember any JavaScript or Perl from classes I took years ago. xD
signature image Hello, sweetie!

firebornx Hey. It's not a huge deal now since we're scrolling off things from 2007, but in the future could you please keep in mind to not double post in this thread?

Posts that are relevent to this thread are:
- Suggestions
- Immediate answers, generally from Super Senshi or Scot

Extended discussion/debate and/or more light hearted chatter regarding the suggestions at hand belong in the Suggestions Discussions topic.

No biggie at the moment but we had a problem with ja--- a user who shall not be named in the past regarding this. I hope you understand.

Thanks :)

I was pondering today whether it would be advantageous from a UI/Scheme perspective to rebuild the template using Twitter Bootstap. It has a lot of nougatty css goodness which allows sites to work at various resolutions, including on cell phones.

It's definitely out of scope for our current work to simply get the bit rot out, but it might be something to look into if crescent development really takes off (yeah right).
I have a suggestion:

Since many people are testing and reporting back right now, they can't always get that done in 15 minuntes, hence the couple of '20ish minute double posts' I've seen.

The Jupiter team is being extremely lax in Central Control, Television Central, etc, and perhaps another way to be reasonable in the "site cleanup topics" is to:

Please lengthen the time for which a post can be edited, perhaps from 15 to 30 minutes

I know I did this on my own instance of crescent.

Thank you for your consideration Mr. Crazy Haired Guy In The Sky.

So, I know things probably need to be fixed before new features are added, but it would be great if in the future there was some way to archive or search old posts. I know suggestions of multiple pages in a topic had been brought up before, but I can't remember why it was shot down. My words are pure literary gold and it would be great if they could be preserved.
I was going to suggest that very thing. Scrolling makes no sense now that hard drive space is cheap.

design constraints of 1998 ought not to apply to 2012
signature image
I thought we scrolled posts because of a more philosophical reason. Young people make stupid posts, memory is temporary, but archives are forever. If we allow everyone to see your full posting history, then you have to live with the history of bad posts from your younger, less mature years.

That being said, now that we are all adults I think pagination is definitely in order.

Do we even purge old posts anymore since crescent? I thought not. I was under the impression that they are simply not displayed. Clicking on top 10 posts will bring of posts that have long since scrolled off the topic, for example. (I think even deleting a post doesn't really delete it, you have to run a purge job before it actually gets nuked from the db.)
The daily job (which isn't running) purges dead posts w/o kudos after a period of time (30 days?) I don't think this needs to change soon. But something to ponder.
signature image
I honestly like the limited scope of forums as they are now, I've always thought it was unique and quirky just like the community.

Perhaps rather than straight out pagination there should be an archive button that allows you to pull up older posts but doesn't tell you exactly how far back the forum history goes...

or a search function that allows you to pull up older posts by date range.

Keep the current format but allows you access.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I think the most important issue has yet to be discussed. The Chibimoon team needs an icon. Are we less than people? if you prick us, do we not bleed sugar stars?

ONE AT A TIME!
Feel free to make one. I think the standard size is 15x15px. If you come with something and Scot or whoever with authority gives the nod I'll set it in the db. Easy peasy.
Speaking of icons, what about the FAQ re-writers team? Is that not important like a quote winner or a moongram article writer?

Also, since Scot has yet to do so yet, SailorCosmos could you perhaps up the editing time for posts to 30 minuts or so instead of 15 since so many people are testing then come back to post their results and all the 20 minute double posts add to scrolling... and right now we have alot of enthusiastic helpers and it would be nice if they could just edit their posts with the results. I know it can be done because I know that was one of the first things I customized when I ran my own instance of crescent.

LOOK AT ME COPYING MY POST INTO A NEW ONE AND DELETING THE OLD ONE...

Thirdly, can a Mercury team member (or higher) PRETTY PLEASE WITH SPRINKLES ON TOP move The Sailor Moon Main Page FAQ Update Folder OUT of the Moon Kingdom and into the sailormoon.org folder. It is an aspect of "Spring Cleaning" after all.

Thank you in advance for taking my suggestions into consideration (and hopefully acting on them! _-_)

I tried moving the Main Page FAQ into the Spring Cleaning folder,   meatballhead , but I couldn't. Makes organizational sense, but I'm pretty sure a lack of write permissions in the destination directory is what is preventing me from moving it. Probably why   ChibiMoon  created it in the Moon Kingdom to begin with.
signature image Hello, sweetie!
Thank you for your attempt, Cloudy. :)

In that case it would have to be done by somebody with a crown (aka a 255) as they have automatic admin permissions to everything. That is why they don't bother putting "Admin: Eternal Senshi Webmaster"... waste of time. They have it anyways.

-edits-

Oh, and somebody should update the site survey, since it was admitted that the item system is borked, the current (and very old survey) is rather null and void at the moment.

Sorry   Cloudburst  &   meatballhead  Unfortunately i had no permissions, so had to put it where ever i could. And not knowing what files   Marsie  could access, the Moon Kingdom was the safest bet. In terms of organization, i like the 2 teams separate. Separate teams, separate permissions, and i hate mucking about in other peoples files unless i have explicit permission to do so.

As a point about icons, FAQ creation and re-writes are actually part of the ChibiMoon teams responsibility, hence why cloudy and i are around. There isnt really a need for a separate user-based team or icon. We're one of the few staff teams that can actually do any work right now, considering the current traffic of the site. Its why i didnt put the main page FAQ in the grep*/The FAQs folder. Its not really an official faq or team, just a place to work together while on the site and compile ideas.

Pagination would prevent endlessly scrolling topics and make double posts a non-issue. While archives are forever, there are so many kids posting in so many forums on the internet now that I think it's just commonplace to have and expect your posts to remain. I agree it's a nice quirk to the site, but I find it a bit annoying from a usability standpoint.

One solution (maybe this already happens?) is if a user deletes his account, his old posts are deleted as well. It may make reviewing older topic posts weird if deleted, but that's a tradeoff I think might be necessary.

On the issue of post editing, do we even want a time limit? A lot of other forums allow unlimited editing and for the most part I haven't seen issues arise with that. If there's concern, a line at the bottom of the post could always indicate it was edited after a certain time period has elapsed, allowing quick edits to go unnoticed.

Finally, one last suggestion is a quote link for posts. It's a minor feature that would be nice, but I understand if there are more pressing issues to work on first.
ChibiMoon You are right, they are two separate teams but should be given separate treatment. Therefore:

grep SailorMoon */sailormoon.org (Equal to the suggestions box) OR
grep SailorMoon */sailormoon.org/System Developent (equal to Spring Cleaning) should be our final destination.)

I checked the permissions all the way and   Marsie  should be fine. After all, below chibi senshi post in the spring cleaning topic, in that respective folder.

They should be equivalent.

SailorJupiter WHOA! Extreme Gerbil! I've been pushing for an extra 15 minutes on the edit but you want to go limitless?! How Exciting! (That kind of sounds like an ad for the 12,841st reality TV show)

I demand a mobile version of the site. And an app. And for you to come over here and hold my phone for me while I use them.

Get on it.
SPUNES on my EYEZ! signature image
SailorUranus  I've been thinking about making the effort to completely redo the layout using Twitter Bootstrap for years. That would mean the site would work equally well on mobile devices, tablets and desktops. That said, it's a pretty huge undertaking. If I still don't have job in a few weeks, I might actually get desperate enough to do it.
Other than having to zoom in to read things, I haven't had any problems using the site from my phone or ancient iTouch.

Not that I'm against the development of a more streamlined version for mobile devices, or an app, because that would be amazing.

How much work would the Bootstrap system you were talking about make for scheme development?

Cherrii  The bad news is that all schemes would have to be done more or less from the ground up. The good news is that there would be a lot less effort than before in creating them since there are a lot of great tools out there now that let you do things like chose a color theme and apply it site-wide. Check out LeSS if you're interested.

I've been using http://foundation.zurb.com/ on a project (breviary.indievisible.org ... of no interest to anyone here, but there it is) and it transistions from mobile to small and large screens quite simply. I'd love to see crescent brought into this millenium.

Scot, I can't stop reading the site. Completely intrigued.
Oh my God, there's a bear in my oatmeal!
SailorJupiter should be in here giving you all #$%$@#!! for not reading the header. XD

I'm just biding my time. Also, please don't swear, SailorUranus. Just because your planet's name is inappropriate doesn't mean you have to be :(
Josh: Pretty much none of that makes any sense without an immediate purpose - at least to me - but if that's where we're headed with scheme development, I will do my best to learn.

Hammy: Has there ever, ever been a time when Beth was appropriate? Cause I'm drawing a blank.

On a side note, I realize the posts we're scrolling out are years old, but should we be following the rules and discussing this in the discussion topic instead of in here?

I mean, I wouldn't want Hammy to have to smack us with a hammer or anything. That would hurt.
